Ladislas Starevich
Links and Videos
Ladislas Starevich is considered the father of stop-motion animation. His early pioneering works were short sub-10-minute length stories in which dead insects were animated within beautifully crafted miniature worlds. For years these films were a mysterious and oft discussed subject in the animation world but few had been seen by anyone and many were thought to be lost.
Research and archival work in the early 80s led too a major rediscovery of Starevich’s work. Today many of his films can be found on the web or purchased on DVD.

How to Get Starewitch Films on DVD or VHS
There is only one DVD readily available in the US. It’s a collection of many of his early classics entitled
The Cameraman's Revenge & Other Fantastic Tales.
It's intermittently available on Amazon.
Sadly, the French DVD Les Contes de l'Horloge Magique (The Magic Clock Fables) collection (the trailer for it is at the top of this page) is not available in the US (or at least, I can’t find it anywhere online). It’s available on Amazon.fr, but I'm not sure how you go about ordering or paying for it from the states. Below is a link if you feeling ambitious. (Just remember the DVD will be in PAL (Region 2) form so you wont be able to play it on a US DVD player. However, you will still be able to play it on your computer with some easily downloadable freeware such as VLC player.
Les Contes de l'Horloge Magique (Magic Clock Fables) DVD at Amazon.fr (France)
There are two more film collections available, both on VHS and DVD from the French company Doriane Films. Below is a link with more information about the films and the company. Rember that the DVDs will be in
PAL (Region 2) format.
Info on the Dorian Films DVDs
You can see the pages for the two films at Doriane Films Website
