Technology is transforming lollipops into narcotic-delivering, music-emitting, fiber-optic-illuminated, hologram-projecting, animated laser-light shows on a stick.

Here’s an overview of recent developments...

Lollipop Radio
Back in 1999 a company named OddzOn, Inc. produced a short lived product called “Pop Radio Sound Bites.”  It was a special lollipop holder that could turn an ordinary lollipop into an FM radio.  The holders allowed the user to tune into FM radio stations, then transmitted the programming, in the form of vibrations, directly through the lollipop to the inner ear. Hasbro Inc., the parent company of OddzOn, is still employing the concept in a strange musical toothbrush called Toothtunes.

“An edible fiber-optic light source is combined with confectionaries, in particular candy, to form a safe edible material possessing unusual combinations of internally generated colors and optical images.”

“Digestible optical fibers act as light pipes to carry light into confectionaries where different colors and patterns of light are generated as the candy is reduced in size.”

“The light source and edible fiber optics not only have uses in candies of all types, especially lollipops and hard candy, but also are suitable for frozen food products.”
